Brokers who are using social media to set up fake policy documents are being named as ‘ghost brokers’. They set up fake documents and publish themselves on social media to give themselves creditability, say the police.
Police are warning customers to take care when buying policies online. Don’t take their word for themselves being credible, make sure you do background checks on their website and database before you take a policy out with them. Another level of credibility is to check the FCA website to see if the brokers are authorised. This is to double check that the broker is creditable for insurance policies.
These ghost brokers take premium money online and then disappear, leaving no trace of themselves, allowing them to get away with the fraud.
