David Morris MP has called for a Westminster Hall debate, to give MPs the opportunity to debate banning liquid nitrogen drinks.
The Conservative MP for Morecambe and Lunesdale has become involved following one of his constituents, 18-year-old Gaby Scanlon, having her stomach removed after consumption of a liquid nitrogen cocktail. He has written to the Prime Minister, health secretary Jeremy Hunt and the Food Standards Agency calling for their support for a ban.
Miss Scanlon was celebrating her 18th birthday when she became breathless and suffered severe stomach pain. She was taken to Lancaster Royal Infirmary, where doctors diagnosed a perforated stomach and performed emergency surgery, removing her stomach in order to save her life.
Lancashire Police said “The premises involved have fully cooperated with all agencies and have suspended drinks involving liquid nitrogen”
