10 things brokers need to know about ERNs

The Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) regulations mean that since 1 April 2012 insurance brokers have to supply insurers with an Employer Reference Number (ERN) in addition to policy data when arranging Employers’ Liability (EL) insurance.

The ERN will be used as a unique reference number enabling claimants and their brokers to search for EL insurers. This means that more claimants can find their insurer in the event of a claim.

Due to the difficulties many brokers have experienced in collecting this data, the FCA has granted a transitional period to 1 April 2013. This means that all data should be supplied to the Employers’ Liability Database (ELD) by this date.
